Hazy IPA: taste, strength and beers to try
A glass of Hazy IPA

Hazy IPA

Hazy IPA, also called New England IPA, is an India pale ale that is cloudy, full-bodied and packed with hop aroma but low in bitterness. It tastes more like fruit juice than like a traditional IPA, and it has become the most popular craft beer style in the United States.

Glassware and serving temperature

Tulip or teku glass45 to 50°F (7–10°C)

What it tastes like

Mango, peach, orange, passion fruit and pineapple from late-added hops, a soft, pillowy body from oats and wheat, and a gentle finish. The haze comes from hop oils, yeast and protein. Expect sweetness rather than bitterness, and drink it fresh.

Where it comes from

The Alchemist's Heady Topper in Vermont, first canned in 2011, was the beer that showed hops could be used for aroma rather than bitterness. Tree House and Trillium in Massachusetts followed, and by 2018 nearly every American brewery made one. The Brewers Association recognised it as its own style in 2018.

How to serve it

7–10°C in a tulip or teku glass. Drink within a month of canning: the aroma that makes it special disappears fast and the beer can turn harsh.

What to eat with it

Spicy food, Thai curry, fried chicken, fish tacos, fruit desserts and creamy cheese.

Don't drink and drive. Plan a safe ride home.
